Bandai

Next up was us walking over to the Bandai tournament area and we sat down with James Takenaka and the head judge. The Naruto tournament had just wrapped up and the smoke was clearing. We were stoked to finally sit down and talk about the Battle Spirits TCG.

Battle Spirits with a small part of Naruto Interview

jcrockett: Thanks for sitting down with us, James.

James T.: No problem. do you mind if I finish eating while we do this? I didn't have time while the tournament was going on.

jcrockett: Go right ahead. So, I guess the first thing we want to do is ask you to explain how Battle Spirits works, plays and what the future holds for it.

James T.: Battle Spirits is a game that started out in Japan. Right now, it's on set 4 over there and it's the number one game. Due to way the game is and the future it can have we're really going to be pushing this one.

jcrockett: That's great. How does the game play?

James T.: Well, you start off by drawing 4 cards, no mulligan.

jcrockett: Wow, that's different.

James T.: The first player doesn't get a core, but the second player will. The first player also can't attack.

jcrockett: Really makes you not want to go first.

James T.: Yes, we're looking to see if there is some sort of incentive for players to go first. Anyway, so you use your cores to summon monsters, play spells and activate abilities.

jcrockett: We played in the sealed deck tournament yesterday. It's a very fast paced game. Right from the start of turn two your battling.

Getalinks: Well, that depends on the type of deck. I play defensively so my games stall for quite a bit at the beginning.

James T.: Really? Most of the games go rather fast. That's why we have the matches 2 out of 3. So, as the game progresses, the object of the game is to reduce your opponent's life points to 0. You start off with 5.

jcrockett: The game has a lot of the elements of other games. Things like how the cores are similar to mana.

James T.: Right. Also, if you're curious, packs contain 8 cards. These are: up to 6 commons, up to 2 uncommons and 1 of 3 rare types (Rare (3:4 packs), Master Rare (1:5 packs) or X-Rare (1:23 packs)). Oh, one more thing packs will retail around $2.99.

Getalinks: Are you going to have images of the cards up on the Battle Spirits site?

Judge: Yes. Actually, we're implementing a search engine for the cards. You'll be able to search by any area: cost, type, etc...

jcrockett: So, on a separate thing, how is Naruto doing?

James T.: We're actually selling out of Naruto faster than we can produce it. For instance, we just wrapped up the Naruto tournament here a little while ago. There were over 240 entrants. Needless to say, we're pushing to produce more product to keep up with the demand.

jcrockett: Awesome. So, it's clear Naruto is going well. So, here's your final two questions. What's your favorite ice cream?

James T.: Vanilla.

Getalinks: And if you could tell the gaming community one thing, what would it be?

James T.: Hmmm... you know I still can't believe the Gundam TCG can't survive in the US.

Finally we had the chance to talk with Mark Purvis and Tera Randall of wizards of the Coast. They were eager to talk with us regarding the newest release of the Magic: The Gathering, Planechase. Here's what they had to say:

Magic: The Gathering Interview

Getalinks: So what's in the works for Magic?

Mark Purvis and Tera Randall: Well, we're very excited to tell you about the new Planechase sets.

Getalinks: Sounds good. What can you let us know about it?

MP/TR: Well, the Phanechase is about multiplayer. There are 10 bigger cards for each player, which make for a nice game changer. there will only be one Plane out at one time.

Getalinks: So, if someone plays agother one, it overlays?

MP/TR: Correct. The way to do that is to roll the dice and you have a 1:6 chance of being able to play a new Plane. There are also additional effects on some of the Planes that take effect when the dice is rolled. There is a chaos spot on the dice that activates the effect.

jcrockett: Will that effect be beneficial to the player?

MP/TR: The effect is usually beneficial. The Plane itself will be a challenge for all the players. It adds to a great multi-player experience.

Getalinks: How many Planes are in the set?

MP/TR: There are 40 Planes in the set. Some will be exclusive. We also want to let players know that we have designed a deck box for the bigger cards and their decks.

Getalinks: We'll get some pics of those so we can let the players see them. Finally, what's your favorite ice cream flavor?

MP/TR: Peanut Butter

jcrockett: And finally, if you could tell the gaming community one thing, what would it be?

MP/TR: Better to lose than to mulligan.
